Textural Collages by Jack Samels

I think of my most recent pieces less as collage and more painting with pre-existing ink, a form of recycling or remixing. Hopefully, the forms and natural textures that are at first glance purely abstract reveal themselves to be highly poetic and calculated in form.

The compositions are optical puzzles that exist in an oscillation between clarity and confusion. I aim to create forms that are strong but airy, bold but flexible. I try to dance the focus of the viewer through the balance between completely abstracting the source material and producing subtle familiarities. I want this hypnotic brain movement to elicit the vague shape of memory, real or not.
